Landing Zone Safety

• Ensure there is a Landing Zone (LZ) Commander/Officer
• Establish LZ radio frequency to communicate with the aircraft
• Establish a landing site:
     1. Clear a minimum area 75'×75'
     2. Pick out all hazards (wires, trees, towers, etc.)
• Keep all personnel back 100'
• Turn off all white lights during night operations
• Do not shine any lights directly at the aircraft
• Do not approach aircraft unless requested by flight crew
• Assign four EMS/Fire personnel to assist flight crew with patient loading
• NOTE: Final decision to land is at the discretion of the pilot in command

Landing Zone Safety is an educational tool developed by the State Emergency Medical Advisory Committee (SEMAC). This information is intended to be used when requesting air medical transport in New York State. The NYS Air Medical TAG encourages its use to promote safety when working with the air medical services.
